- I have a Sony XR-5550 cassette deck, which I purchased last summer.
- Recently, I noticed that, even over relatively smooth roads, at highway
- sppeds, tapes sounded like the sound was breaking up (particularly,
- female vocals, violins and steel guitars sounded sort of like they
- were gargling). It eventually got to the point where I was able to
- reproduce the symptom by tapping on the dash near the player, and the
- dealer replaced the unit. The new unit seems to exhibit the same symptom,
- but not so severely (I can't reproduce it at will, for example). It
- seems more pronounced at the beginning of a tape.
-
- My questions:
-
- What exactly is the problem? How much sensitivity is normal? (I could
- understand extremely rough roads, but moderately old, paved
- interstates?) Is this a common problem with Sonys? Can it be
- repaired? What can I do to convince my warranty station that there's
- a problem with the new unit (short of taking them out on the highway)?
- What recourse do I have if the Sony claims that the unit works
- correctly? (The dealer called Sony, and they said that they had never
- heard of such a problem. It seems strange that I would have it in two
- units in a row...)
-
- Help, please! If I am going to do something with the original dealer,
- I need an answer this week, as I am leaving the area soon, and I'll
- have to go to the nearest authorized service center to my new location
- and start the process again. I doubt that the new center will consent
- to a swap.
