- Rules for Survival
-
- 1. Never kiss.
-
- Procession moves through her rooms,
- night after night.
-
- Racously over-friendly, one tries to
- kiss Karen in the hallway;
- she evades deftly (long practice),
- pulling him into her bedroom.
-
- 2. Never let them stay the night.
-
- Soft brown wisps fallen across her cheek,
- and she is eight again, vulnerable.
- Sleeping she may murmur again the name
- she tries to forget.
-
- 3. Never learn their names.
-
- Smothered willingly between layers
- of faceless
- nameless
- men.
