-
- No. In order to raise additional financing beyond what the studio
- provided, Lee went to prominent black entertainers. So, those
- stars would have provided approximately six million, at most (Lee
- I believe invested two million of the three he was to be paid
- for the film - compared to Cosby and Oprah, Spike does not have
- the financial resources to actually back a film). I assume that
- Cosby and Oprah expected to get a return on their money, and that
- it was not just given away. Depending on the financial arrangements
- payback would not occur until the film returned to the studio
- what it cost to produce - and for that to happen, it will have to
- roughly double its cost in gross (so, 66 million) *plus* ten
- million for promotional expenses (that's probably a low estimate).
-
- So, until it hauls in 76 million, nobody makes any money (except
- the theater owners - maybe).
-
- I will, however, admit that I do not like Spike Lee, and so I
- am somewhat eager to see him go down in flames. It is entirely
- possible that the overseas market will save them - though I
- am very skeptical the Japanese will even sniff at it, and Japan
- is a pretty damn big market. If, however, it does manage to
- match the American release for receipts, the film will make
- perhaps two million in profit, divided amongst the investors.
-
- Spike is going to take a bath on this one, and when your a
- fire-breathing, controversy-seeking director of arguable
- talent - you don't get many baths before you go away.
