- Here's an interesting switch: a male friend of mine who saw the film
- in a theater with me left the theater at just about the same point
- your wife left the room. Conversely, the wife of another friend enjoyed
- COOK (more than I anticipated) when we later viewed it on tape.
- So I don't think gender, number or case has much to do with reactions
- to the film.
-
- I think it's important to view COOK as part of Greenaway's development
- as a director. He seems to favor themes that have to do with civilization,
- civility, and the breaking down of those systems. In BELLY OF AN
- ARCHITECT there is a lurking fascist element waiting to wrest control
- away from the idealistic American abroad. In DROWNING BY NUMBERS,
- he seems to imply (in a comic way) that murder might be acceptable if
- the victims are oppressive dullards. (Your wife might be pleased
- by this film since the women succeed in doing away with insensitive,
- stupid men.) COOK has been called a modern revenge tragedy, a style
- of drama I think few current filmgoers recognize or understand.
- Perhaps you and she could go down to the library and read up on the
- subject a little... It might improve your appreciation of the film.
