  21. I personally don't care whether an actor uses an accent appropriate to his
  22. role, as long as he can successfully portray the role. I haven't seen
  23. "Prince of Thieves", but if Costner sounded out of place and incongruous
  24. because of his American accent, then something should have been done
  25. differently--whether Costner should have tried to sound English or everyone
  26. else should have tried to sound American is up to you (one guess what 95% of
  27. the net will pick... :^), but if the actor's accent interferes with his
  28. ability to be convincing, then something needs to change. I think it would
  29. have been extremely strange if Brannagh and Thompson had been the only two
  30. characters with British accents in "Dead Again", and was impressed by their
  31. ability to sound reasonably American (once I got over my initial shock :^).

  33. On a side note, remember how "Hunt for Red October" started out with
  34. subtitles under the Russians speaking Russian? I thought at the time that it
  35. would have been a really neat effect if all the Russian scenes had been
  36. filmed in Russian and subtitled for the entire movie. Did this occur to
  37. anyone else when watching "Red October" for the first time? Was the thought
  38. that most of the movie might be in subtitled Russian a cause for dismay, or
  39. delight? In my case, definitely the latter, and I was almost disappointed
  40. when they switched to English. Ah well, so it goes.
