- I think the film can also be viewed as a character study of Jonas Nightingale,
- the snake-oil evangelist character Steve Martin plays. Duped when young,
- he now cheats and tricks and is the guy who always wants to be the manipulator,
- the one who is "in control" of the situation. Try to out-trump him, and he
- raises the stakes. Eventually, however, he meets his match, and he does not
- undergo a crisis of faith so much as a crisis of control. I don't think it was
- underdeveloped at all, and Jonas is definitely one of the most interesting
- characters to have appeared in the movies of the recent weeks.
-
- Another great theme of the movie is the friendship between Martin and Winger's
- characters. Strong male/female friendships are lacking in the movies, and
- even though it isn't developed incredibly well, it is a nice change.
-
- ***1/2 out of 5 stars. Definitely one of the better movies of the holiday
- season.
