  37. I think the film can also be viewed as a character study of Jonas Nightingale,
  38. the snake-oil evangelist character Steve Martin plays. Duped when young,
  39. he now cheats and tricks and is the guy who always wants to be the manipulator,
  40. the one who is "in control" of the situation. Try to out-trump him, and he
  41. raises the stakes. Eventually, however, he meets his match, and he does not
  42. undergo a crisis of faith so much as a crisis of control. I don't think it was
  43. underdeveloped at all, and Jonas is definitely one of the most interesting
  44. characters to have appeared in the movies of the recent weeks.

  46. Another great theme of the movie is the friendship between Martin and Winger's
  47. characters. Strong male/female friendships are lacking in the movies, and
  48. even though it isn't developed incredibly well, it is a nice change.

  50. ***1/2 out of 5 stars. Definitely one of the better movies of the holiday 
  51. season.
