- When you read a post's headers, look for the credit of "From." That's
- the person responsible for the post. It is truly astounding how much
- bad spelling even a casual reader of net news can find in almost every
- post we read. I really have to wonder why, for example, in a critically
- acclaimed and multi-mega-buck post like Harv R. Laser's "annoying nuances in
- films" that with all the people in front of whose eyes the verbiage
- will pass after it gets sent to the net, how there could be gaffes like
- "site" instead of "cite" and "laffing" instead of "laughing".
- It's so terribly obvious and at least one r.a.m. reader mentioned it.
- That's just to cite one horrible example of bad spelling in an
- otherwise excellent post made by a popular r.a.m. reader with a good
- recent reputation. I can't EVER read "annoying nuances in films" without
- laughing when that paragraph comes up, and that takes all the magic
- out of it for me.
-
- Bad spelling is not the same thing as bad grammar or bad logic or
- a poorly thought out argument. Just as there's bad spelling, there's
- bad writing, and bad everything else you can name. But I'm really
- curious how Laser's "site" and "laffing" could have gotten past
- Laser, his assistants and everyone else involved.
- They really tried so hard to put the argument about continuity across,
- and the post has a beautiful look to it, but those two stupid mistakes
- really sour it for me. Perhaps 100 years from now, news
- historians will remember these niggling little flubs in otherwise
- good posts. Or not.
-
- Anyone recall any bad spelling mistakes in "Use of `goto' statement
- considered harmful"? :-)
