  12. Eugene Manlove Rhodes is by far my favorite Western writer (he was a
  13. *real* cowboy from New Mexico, and I'll be durned if I can remember the
  14. name of one of his books. [ _Gene Autrey and the Golden Ladder Gang_ (or
  15. something like that) ripped off one of Rhodes' better plots, however.]
  16. Great sense of humor, good solid plots and literate writing.  The
  17. introduction to his collected stories pointed out that a lot of time all a
  18. cowboy had to do on the range, in a line shack or whatever, was *read*. 
  19. And the Bull Durham packages included tiny print editions of Shakespeare's
  20. plays and other good stuff.  And it is clear in my memory of Rhodes'
  21. writing that his informal education had an effect on him.  (I don't mean
  22. he wrote in Elizabethan English, confound it!) I think I'm on my way to
  23. the library to see what I can find by Rhodes!  It has been well over 10
  24. years since I have read any of his books...much too long.
