- Eugene Manlove Rhodes is by far my favorite Western writer (he was a
- *real* cowboy from New Mexico, and I'll be durned if I can remember the
- name of one of his books. [ _Gene Autrey and the Golden Ladder Gang_ (or
- something like that) ripped off one of Rhodes' better plots, however.]
- Great sense of humor, good solid plots and literate writing. The
- introduction to his collected stories pointed out that a lot of time all a
- cowboy had to do on the range, in a line shack or whatever, was *read*.
- And the Bull Durham packages included tiny print editions of Shakespeare's
- plays and other good stuff. And it is clear in my memory of Rhodes'
- writing that his informal education had an effect on him. (I don't mean
- he wrote in Elizabethan English, confound it!) I think I'm on my way to
- the library to see what I can find by Rhodes! It has been well over 10
- years since I have read any of his books...much too long.
