  23. Sounds like a natural correlation to me.  But then do you think that I
  24. should be free to vote against a newsgroup which I expect to be poor
  25. quality?  If not, why not?

  27. A high s/n ratio is of value to both a newsgroup and a mailing list.
  28. What we're after here is a way to decide when one or the other is the
  29. better distribution mechanism.  Right now the rules assume that 100+
  30. on the vote means there will be wide enough distribution that news is
  31. better than mail.  The primary objection to the 100+ rule is that 100
  32. is no longer enough given the growth of Usenet to establish that the
  33. group will be widely enough read.

  35. Another issue I have with easy newsgroup creation is that mailing
  36. lists are generally of better quality in terms of s/n ratio.  I also
  37. think that mailing lists are accessible to more people than
  38. newsgroups.  This leads me to expect that the best way to grow a
  39. quality group is to start it as a mailing list, then propose a
  40. newsgroup when the traffic makes mail impractical, and gateway the
  41. group and the mailing list.  I'm open to counterargument, but agreeing
  42. may be difficult given that any disputes about s/n ratio will be hard
  43. to settle objectively.
