  23. Discuss, schmiscuss.  We can discuss it forever.  It doesn't need to
  24. be discussed more, it needs to be discussed until there is a
  25. consensus.  You are the only one I hear trying to keep the newsgroup
  26. proposal and the mailing lists separate, so I believe a consensus
  27. already exists on this point at least.  I have you down as the
  28. exception which proves the rule.  :)

  30. Gatewaying the existing mailing list traffic is the whole point of the
  31. new group proposal.  You didn't bother to answer my main point about
  32. traffic, which is that high volume is what Usenet is good at.  A
  33. significant increase in traffic because a mailing list "goes public"
  34. is expected to give us a net decrease in network bandwidth used by the
  35. traffic, because of the different distribution algorithm.  People who
  36. have a choice will also leave the mailing list and join the Usenet
  37. group because their favorite newsreader will permit them to more
  38. easily select information and avoid junk mail.  Traffic on the new
  39. newsgroup is good, unless it is off the topic.  More people get
  40. involved who didn't know about the mailing lists but do read news.
  41. Where do you see a problem?  Be specific; there are no /a priori/
  42. reasons why gatewaying should be delayed and you will have to come up
  43. with some good ones relating to the subject matter or some technical
  44. reasons nobody else thought of to beat the good reasons for doing it
  45. at the start.
