  21. Conference Overview:
  22.  
  23. The annual HCI conference brings together researchers and practitioners,
  24. from both industry and academia, who are working to improve the
  25. effectiveness of computers as tools for people.  The conference is a
  26. major international forum for both the people-oriented disciplines of
  27. human factors, psychology and ergonomics, and the computer-oriented
  28. disciplines of software engineering, systems analysis and project
  29. management.  Computer users from other disciplines are also welcome! We
  30. are particularly interested this year to bring together the engineering
  31. and computing/psychology strands of HCI.

  33. The HCI series of conferences is held under the auspices of the British
  34. HCI Group (formerly the Human-Computer Interaction Specialist Group of
  35. the British Computer Society).  The Proceedings of HCI '93 will be
  36. published.

  89. Every submission should have a cover sheet giving the following
  90. information:
  91.  
  92.    - the title of the submission;
  93.    - the category of the submission (see below);
  94.    - the address, phone number and email address of each of the authors;
  95.    - a nomination of one of the authors as contact person for the submission.
  96.  
  97. Please send SEVEN copies of each submission.
  98.  
  99. The categories for submission are:
  100.  
  101. Papers:
  102. Full draft papers are expected.  These should be less than 6000 words in
  103. length, double-spaced, and include a 100-word abstract and keyword list.
  104. Some authors may be invited to re-submit papers as posters.
  105.  
  106. Recent Research:
  107. These papers are expected to be topical, informative and may be
  108. controversial.
  109.  
  110. Panels:
  111. Please submit a two-page proposal, including suggestions for panel members.
  112.  
  113. Posters:
  114. Where it is felt that a visual presentation would benefit more than a
  115. paper, a poster submission should be made. Posters will not be rejected
  116. paper submissions.
  117.  
  118. Applications of HCI in Industry:
  119. A number of sessions will be devoted to presentations of industrial and
  120. commercial HCI activity. Please submit two-page proposals for papers
  121. or demonstration sessions.
  122.  
  123. Doctoral Consortium:
  124. Please submit a two-page description of your thesis, which as yet should be
  125. unexamined.  The consortium will be a closed session before a panel of
  126. experts.
  127.  
  128. Tutorials:
  129. Proposals are invited for half-day tutorials on any relevant topic.
  130. Tutorials may address HCI research, teaching or practice (industrial and
  131. commercial), and may be introductory or advanced in nature.  A balanced
  132. tutorial programme will be selected in line with the results of a survey
  133. of tutorial requirements.  Tutors will be paid a fee partly based on
  134. tutorial attendance.
  135.  
  136. Please submit a two-page proposal, intended for attendees, containing:
  137.  
  138.     - objectives;
  139.     - level and background of intended audience;
  140.     - details of content;
  141.     - style of presentation;
  142.     - background of each tutor.
  143.  
  144. Demonstrations:
  145. Please submit a two-page description of the demonstration, indicating space
  146. requirements.  It is the responsibility of the demonstrator to provide the
  147. equipment. Demonstrations can be software, hardware or video.
  148.  
  149. Exhibitors:
  150. A commercial exhibition will be mounted.  Potential exhibitors should
  151. contact the above address for further details.

  153. Referees:
  154.  
  155. Offers to referee submissions are invited from both industry and
  156. academia.  Referees receive ten pounds off the conference cost per
  157. submission refereed.  Potential referees should send contact details and
  158. an indication of their areas of expertise.
