- We're about to move to Boston. Does anyone have a list
- handy of good Boston bakeries?
-
- Depends where you live. There was a fellow who did a survey not too
- long ago. In the Cambridge-Somerville area, Panini is very good.
- Ther is a place in Brookline whose name I've forgotten but is supposed
- to be very good.
-
- Can one get a genuine Jewish rye anywhere? Ditto bagels? French bread?
-
- I don't know about rye. There are lots of bagel places (this is the
- latest fad, apparently), some awful, some OK.
-
- No French bread to French standards, but the good bakeries all make
- some approximation, usually too sour.

- The best bagels in Boston (take it from a transplanted New Yorker
- who has been here for 10 yrs) is at Kupel's on Harvard St. in
- Brookline half way between Beacon St and Commenwealth Ave. By
- "best" I mean as good as one of the moderate bagel places in NYC.
- The Rye bread up here is nothing like that in NY, you'll have to
- settle for the supermarket variety. The best French bread is
- at the chain Au Bon Pain (all over) and at a small bakery on
- Beacon St (Green Line to St. Mary's) called Savoy French Bakery.
- Still, nothing like the real thing in Paris.

- Best Jewish Rye: Diamond Bakery in Newton (Beacon Street near Waban Village)
-
- Best Challah: Diamond Bakery.
-
- Best Bagels: Personal choice: Finagle a Bagel in Faniel Hall Marketplace
- (also sold at Auburndale Star Market in Newton). Most people's choice:
- Kupel`s in Brookline (day-olds are a great deal at 8/$.95). Also liked
- Rosenfelds (or is it Rosenthals?) in Newton Centre.
-
- Best regional specialty: Portugese Sweet Bread (like a sweet lemony challah,
- not as eggy, makes great french toast).
-
- Best French Bread: Clear Flour Bakery in Brookline. This is the only non-
- retail operation. They do sell in their bakery, but supply is limited.
- I love the sour-dough, my wife loved the Herb. Not too far from Kupels's
- if you have a map to guide you. I did get some superlative french bread
- in Needham recently, I think the bakery is called Bon Appetite.
- Clearflour also makes alot of other fine breads, except for Foccacia.

- If you find the Kupel's bagels too soft, you could try Katz Bakery
- (it may be Katz Bagel Bakery) in Chelsea.... They are essentially a
- wholesale operation, but they are open for retail at some times....
- I'd suggest calling them. You may also want directions.... Both
- Katz and Chelsea are a little grubby now, alas. ...
-
- If they are essentially wholesale, it might be easier to ask them who
- retails their bagels in your area...
