- If you find the Kupel's bagels too soft, you could try Katz Bakery (it may
- be Katz Bagel Bakery) in Chelsea. Their bagels are crustier (also smaller;
- they have real holes, almost like doughnuts).
- They are essentially a wholesale operation, but they are open for retail
- at some times. I remember that they used to open continuously from some
- time of Friday until some time on Sunday. The rest of the week the hours
- are short.
-
- I'd suggest calling them. You may also want directions. I don't have a map with me,
- but I can give general ones. Take the Tobin (or Mystic/Tobin) bridge north
- across the Mystic River; this is Route 1. Take the first exit into Chelsea.
- Turn right at the bottom of the ramp (you may have to, or the ramp may curve).
- Continue on this street a number of blocks, until you are about a block or two
- past Broadway. At this point, you will be in a fairly open area with a street
- heading from your lower right to your upper left. Turn left on to this street
- (it is just a little gentler than a true left turn); it should be the street
- that Katz is on, which is either Pearl or Division (I think they're at the
- corner of Pearl and Division). You should see it soon, on the right. There
- is a door facing the corner for the retail store, although at low crowd times,
- it may be closed. In this case, there is another door further along that you
- can use.
-
- Both Katz and Chelsea are a little grubby now, alas. When I was a little boy,
- my grandfather (who had a store on Broadway, just a short distance away) would
- take me to buy bagels on the way home from the store every Saturday night. I
- always got to eat a hot bagel in the car; it was often too hot for me to hold,
- and my grandmother had to hold it for me in her gloved hands.
