- Someone has requested a summary, so here goes:

- Bagels--Kupels on Harvard Street North of Coolidge Corner, Brookline.
- "Say Cup-L's" (according to the bag). Unchallenged, I think.
- My New York friends concur.
- French Bread--There's this chain up here called Au Bon Pain that
- purportedly sells French bread, but I'm not so sure. Their
- baguettes, for one thing, seem to be too bready. Too fluffy.
- Not thin & crusty, the way I imagine real baguettes should be.
- But I'm not an expert on French bread, since I don't own a
- kitchen scale on which to weigh the flour.
-
- My favorite bakery--Clear Flower Bakery, on a back street off of
- Commonwealth Ave., near the intersection with Brighton Ave. I
- believe it is on the Brookline side of the line. Awesome sourdough
- bread, and if you get there early enough in the morning, sticky
- rolls that melt in your mouth.
-
- Hmmm. I can smell the dough now...

- For Jewish rye, (ask for "cissle") try Diamond Bakery on Beacon
- St. in Newton, a block or two west of Walnut St. (where Newton's
- B&C is).

- Try Wheatstone's on Peterborough Street in the Fenway. They have
- lotsa good bread, including some quite respectable baguettes and good
- sourdough. They also serve coffee etc. It's a real nice place to
- sit and have a muffin or a scone or something.
-
- On the other hand, I'm sorry to disagree with so many who've
- recommended Kupels for bagels. Much too soft. I find that
- Eagerman's (a terribly-run store by the way) are a lot more
- like the real thing; so do my New York-bred son and daughter-
- in-law.
