  27. Islamabad - Dec 24: Washington has asked Islamabad to return nine warships 
  28. which it had leased to Pakistan, Pakistani Naval Chief Admiral Saeed Mohd
  29. Khan has disclosed. The demand is in contravention of the Pressler
  30. Amendment which provides that Pakistan's defense capabilities level
  31. should not be lowered, Admiral Khan told.
  32.     At present the Pakistan navy has nine US warships on lease including
  33. "PNS ASLAT" whose lease has already expired. According to the Frontier
  34. Post, the US was not keen on having these ships back at the year's
  35. begining, but of late it has changed its mind and is pressing for
  36. early return of the vessels which includes a supporting ship.
  37.     US military and ecnomic aid was suspended to Pakistan in 
  38. Oct 1990 under the Pressler Amendment under suspicion that Pakistan's 
  39. nuclear program was weapon oriented. Islamabad has repeatedly denied the 
  40. charge but said that while pursuing its peaceful nuclear program it had 
  41. acquired 'a certain capability.'

  45. Washington Dec 24: Iran and Pakistan have been cooperating in making 
  46. a nuclear bomb for the last two years, the NBC TV reported Tuesday evening
  47. quoting U.S intelligence reports.
  48.     The TV quoted Iranian President Ali Hashmei Rafsanjani telling
  49. his people about a possible war with the west and that the soul
  50. guarentor of victory during such a war would be nuclear weapons.
  51. Pakistan foreign secretary has described the Islamic bomb a mirage.
  52.     NBC said Iran has also been seeking nuclear technology from other
  53. countries including India, Argentian and China, but the US has been
  54. able to stop such help except for the sale of a Russian nuclear rector
  55. to Iran.
  56.     The hatred for the US as the great satan in Iran has survived
  57. for the last 13 years and Presdient Rafsanjani has been engineering the
  58. military build up including efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.
