- I can understand that a company would be reluctant to put out a lot of
- up-front money to interview someone for a short-term contract, and I would
- gladly pay the travel expenses (e.g. gas and maybe a meal) to go to an
- interview within, say, a two-hour drive by car.
-
- However, I once paid for a plane ticket for a contract interview, and
- would never do so again...
-
- In 1987, the Mac software company I was working for in Texas was in the
- process of going bust, and we programmers split off to form an independent
- guns-for-hire development firm. I was put in touch with a VP at a major
- Mac software company by a contact at Apple, and he said in a phone call
- that he was interested in talking with us about having us do some
- development work for them from our offices in Texas. I asked him who
- was going to pay for the plane tickets, and he said, "If I were going
- to have you come out for an interview for a full-time job, I'd pay for
- them, but since you're pitching a contract, you should pay for them."
- Being new to all this, I took this at face value. So, one of the other
- guys and I dutifully bought our plane tickets and arrived at the firm, and
- the first words out of this VP's mouth were, "We'd be happy to offer you
- all full-time jobs if you want to move to California, but we don't work
- with contractors."
-
- We sent him a bill for the cost of the plane tickets, but he never paid it.
