- My partner and I always make sure to get some money up front, partly to
- cover any up-front costs like special software tools we have to buy, but
- mostly to make sure the customer will take the contract seriously, which
- they sometimes won't until they've put some money into it.
-
- The up-front payment doesn't have to be a *lot* - we ask for 1/4 the total
- amount on short contracts, and as little as 1/10 on long ones. On a three
- week contract, I'd ask for perhaps 1/3 up front and the balance on completion.
- (Generally, we do firm-fixed-price contracts with progress payments spaced
- so that we get a check every month or so, and a big check at the end.)

-
- It depends on what you're doing. I figure that, say, support calls to
- compiler vendors come out of my pocket, and also some reasonably small amount
- of other long-distance calls. However, we recently had a client ask us to
- talk on a frequent basis to one of their customers in London (we're in
- California), and so we're planning to say that's fine as long as we don't
- pay the long distance bill.

- Good luck,
