- Probably the definitive work on alternative (lay) midwifery in the USA is Ina
- May Gaskin's book, SPIRITUAL MIDWIFERY. She is the head of midwifery and birth
- education services on The Farm, a commune in Tennessee which was started by a
- group of California hippies in the late 60's. They have delivered over 1800
- babies on The Farm now under Ina May's direction in the last 20-some years.
- Her book (1991 edition) is in its 3rd printing.
-
- The Santa Cruz Birth Center also put out a very good book, THE BIRTH BOOK, in
- the early 70's on alternative midwifery, but I think it is out of print now.
- Officially the Santa Cruz Birth Center is out-of-business now, having had a
- run-in with the state of California re. "practicing medicine without a
- license", but I do believe there is still a very active feminist women's health
- care community in Santa Cruz wwhich (at least) had its roots in the Santa Cruz
- Birth Center 20 years ago.
-
- The journal, TEXAS MIDWIFERY, is published by
-
- The Association of Texas Midwives
- Suite 1A-202
- 603 West 13th St.
- Austin, TX 78701
-
- ...who, I imagine, have info on midwifery apprenticeships in Texas.
-
- Outside of Texas, but in other parts of North America, there is:
-
- Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA)
- P.O. Box 1121
- Bristol, VA 24203-1121
-
- They publish the MANA NEWS, and can provide the addresses of state and
- provincial midwifery organizations.
-
- Ina May Gaskin still publishes THE BIRTH GAZETTE (a quarterly magazine). It
- costs $25(US)/year. She can be reached at
-
- The Birth Gazette
- 42, The Farm
- Summertown, TN 38483
-
- For those interested in Nurse-Midwifery (a pretty distinct practice from that
- of lay midwifery in North America), there is
-
- JOURNAL OF NURSE-MIDWIFERY
- Elsevier Scientific Publishing Co.
- 52 Vanderbilt Ave.
- New York, NY 10017
