- Dan> Greetings,
-
- Dan> My wife and I are expecting our first child in January and I have
- Dan> some questions about the pros and cons about childhood
- Dan> vaccinations: which ones are good ideas and which ones may cause
- Dan> more harm than good.
-
- Dan> My understanding is that there is a range of vaccinations which
- Dan> are required by law (in Oregon), but that we may decline these
- Dan> vaccinations by claiming religious exemptions. From discussions
- Dan> with our naturopathic doctor I understand that polio and tetanus
- Dan> vaccinations are advised, and others, like mumps, measles, and
- Dan> diptheria, are not advised on the basis of the potential harm or
- Dan> inefficacy of the vaccine and the treatability of the diseases
- Dan> they are intended to defend against.
-
- Dan> I would like to be able to make the best informed decision
- Dan> possible for our child. Any comments and/or suggestions on where
- Dan> to look for more information about this topic would be
- Dan> appreciated.

- 1- Consider the potential complications of the diseases, not simply
- the common effects. The permanently harmfull effects of these
- diseases are far more likely than the potential complications of the
- vaccine. Mumps may lead to meningitis or to deafness. Measles may
- lead to blindness. There are other complications. Read up on the
- diseases.
-
- 2- Consider schooling. You may be able to send your children to
- public schools in Oregon right now, but lack of vaccines may restrict
- them from entering college later. They may also be prevented from
- travel in forign countries. Consider the possibility that they may
- require these vacines as adults. What are the risks of these same
- vaccines in adults?
-
- side note: State University of New York's Binhamton campus was
- closed a few years ago due to a measles outbreak. All students were
- required to be vaaccinated against measles before being allowed back
- on campus.
