  21. It is *not* in common use throughout Asia. At the peak of its
  22. popularity in China (which happened roughly 15 years ago), acupuncture
  23. anesthesia was used in no more than 5% of the operations because it
  24. usually doesn't work. Its use is extremely rare today.

  26. The history of acupuncture is quite interesting, having been
  27. re-discovered and rejected many times throughout history by Asia and
  28. the west. Even the recent fad of electroacupuncture was used in france
  29. in the 19th century.

  31. Acupuncture owes its modern status in China to the good Chairman Mao.
  32. When Mao first came to power, acupuncture was not considered valid by
  33. the Chinese. Unable to provide decent health care to the masses, Mao
  34. reversed a 20 year Kuomintang policy and declared acupuncture (along
  35. with many other superstitious medical practices) to be valid. This was
  36. purely a political/world status move - it was important to China's
  37. status to prove that she could take care of her people by herself. By
  38. repelling China's version of a consumer protection law, all of a
  39. sudden there was no longer a doctor shortage!

  41. They even went so far as to hoax visiting westerners (part of the
  42. Nixon trip in the 1970's) by staging major surgery whose only
  43. anesthetic was claimed to be acupuncture. The patients actually had
  44. received local chemical pain killers or local anesthetics before the
  45. surgery.

  47. The Chinese herbal formulas in pill form that you can find in health
  48. food stores and other places are illegally marketed and dangerous.
  49. These pills contain very potent drugs in addition to the herbs, but
  50. these drugs are not listed on the label. The FDA has found high levels
  51. of Valium, Librium, anti inflamitories and other drugs in these pills.
  52. One drug that has been found is Aminopyrine, which has been illegal in
  53. the US since 1938 because it can cause agranulocytosis.
