- The Open Systems Future: Leveraging the LAN
-
- FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
-
- Closing date for papers, February 12, 1993
- (please send four copies for review)
-
- LANCONF, an IFIP WG 8.4 international working conference,
- will be held in Perth, Western Australia, August 29 to
- September 3, 1993. It is co-sponsored by the Australian
- Computer Society and Curtin University. The proceedings will
- be published by North-Holland. The conference has two
- themes, the open system future and leveraging the LAN.
-
- Leveraging the LAN - Many organizations have office LANs in
- place. The investment in a LAN has often been justified on
- the basis of the provision of E-mail. If one assumes that
- this investment has been made, and that the organization
- possesses both skilled office workers and spare LAN
- capacity, the question that can be posed is: "What
- additional applications would allow such organizations to
- better capitalize on their investment?" Hence "Leveraging
- the LAN" is one part of the conference title.
-
- The Open Systems Future - What impact will the promised open
- systems future have on the office LAN? Will it lead to even
- greater leverage, or has its promise been overstated? How
- close is the open systems future? What needs to be done
- to realize it? What will it mean for the office LAN? Hence
- "The Open Systems Future" is the other part of the
- conference title.
-
- Topic areas - The conference aims to attract a mixed
- audience of researchers and practitioners interested in
- promoting the more effective utilisation of LAN technology.
- The conference focus is on technology transfer. While
- specialised tracks will be of particular interest to one
- group or the other, the main aim is to bring together
- researchers, who are interested in the implementation of new
- LAN-based systems and software, and inquisitive
- practitioners, who are keen to explore new ways of
- exploiting the LAN technology they have in place. Topics of
- interest include:
-
- Case study applications of known and emerging LAN-based
- systems and software.
- LAN's - group decision support or meeting augmentation tools
- System development methods for distributed applications
- Calendaring or resource and meeting scheduling
- High tech, low tech or no tech meeting support
- Managing distributed systems development
- Office design for the electronic future
- OSI - matching promise and practice
- Computer mediated communication
- Decision conferencing
- LAN security
- Work in the electronic office
- LAN's - the productivity gains
- OSI - its impact on office systems
- Innovative uses for the data highway
- How to implement group support systems
- LAN support for Business Teams and TQM
- EDI and other document handling systems
- The impact of telecommunications on the office
- Electronic bulletin boards, diaries or directories
- Face to face versus computer mediated communication
- Managing information streams through computer conferencing
- facilities
- Linking LAN's to related technologies (eg WAN's or multi-
- media facilities)
- Technology options (eg facsimile versus graphics tablet) and
- alternate futures (eg ubiquitous computing or embodied
- virtuality)

- LANCONF - INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
-
- Please submit four copies of your paper for review by
- February 12, 1993.
-
- The first copy should include the authors full names and
- addresses. The three remaining copies should be a complete
- copy of the first EXCEPT that the names and addresses of
- authors should be removed. This will ensure equity of
- treatment in the "blind" reviewing process.
-
- We only need a readable draft for reviewing purposes - hard
- copy please, no e-mail of fax. But if the paper is accepted
- we will require a camera ready copy in North-Holland's
- standard format. Authors may wish to keep this in mind when
- creating the original paper to avoid unnecessary editing
- later on. North-Holland's camera ready requirements can be
- obtained from either
-
- North-Holland direct s.smit.@elsevier.nl
- The LANCONF secretary lanconf@BA1.curtin.edu.au
- or
- The program chair vogel@mis.arizona.edu
-
- Any request for advice on choice of topic, paper content etc
- etc should be put direct to program chair Doug Vogel.
-
- All indications so far are that we are in for an excellent
- conference. There has been a strong expression of interest
- world-wide, the working group format will maximise the
- opportunity for individuals to present and discuss their
- ideas, we have some strong keynote speakers lined up and,
- apart from all that, springtime in Perth is wonderful.
