- I always respected Solbourne for bundling all of X (and some useful clients
- like xloadimage), although they tended to be a little slow getting new releases
- out.

- I think that HP does a better job than many vendors, although (if I remember
- correctly) the include files are in a subset that one has to pay for, and that
- as of four months ago they were still at R4 and made one pay for the OSF's Motif.
- I built R5 under HPUX, but wish that HP would return to the policy of providing
- server support to MIT.

-
- It would be interesting to compare both to a 2/50 running 3.x and suntools.
- As we get faster workstations, we get OS's, window systems, and tools with
- more overhead. I believe that these days much of the development cost of
- commercial applications is in glitzing the interface, and actual functionality
- is often secondary. I find it interesting that some vendors go to great
- expense to build their products with both XView (OpenLook) and the OSF's
- Motif toolkit, when I'd really rather have it use neither.
-
- For example, earlier versions of FrameMaker weren't ALL that bad on a diskless
- 3/60 with 8 meg running 4.1.1, but recent versions with the OSF's Motif
- library statically linked in are over 2.5 meg (3 meg for sun4's), and are
- nearly unusable on a 12-meg machine.
