  24. Micro Decisionware Announces Agreement with NeXT Computer, Inc. to
  25. Certify NeXT Desktop Applications with the Database Gateway Product

  28. Boulder, CO - December 9, 1992 - Micro Decisionware, Inc. (MDI) today
  29. announced an agreement with NeXT Computer, Inc. of Redwood City, CA to
  30. provide connectivity between NeXTSTEP, NeXT Computer's object-oriented
  31. system software environment, and the MDI Database Gateway product
  32. line.  The agreement also provides for the certification of Database
  33. Kit (DBKit), a NeXTSTEP Release 3 desktop tool, to access DB2 and
  34. other host databases through the MDI Database Gateway.

  36. MDI Database Gateway Extends NeXT Applications Data Access This
  37. partnership will allow customers using NeXTSTEP to extend data access
  38. to DB2, SQL/DS, and non-relational host data.  NeXTSTEP runs under
  39. MACH, a UNIX-compatible operating system, and offers a flexible
  40. solution for connecting to networks.  NeXT workstations have a high
  41. degree of connectivity to multiple platforms, now extended by the MDI
  42. Database Gateway products.

  44. "This agreement with MDI is strategic for NeXT because it further
  45. expands the range of database options available to NeXTSTEP developers
  46. and users," said Brett Bachman, NeXT's director of NeXTSTEP product
  47. marketing.  "One of the great strengths of NeXTSTEP Release 3 is
  48. DBKit, an object-oriented tool kit that permits NeXT client
  49. workstations to gain easy access to relational databases from any
  50. vendor simply by providing an adaptor to the database.  The MDI
  51. Database Gateway provides just such an adaptor to DB2 and the right
  52. variety of data on IBM mainframe databases."

  54. Currently, the NeXT workstations can access the Database Gateway on
  55. OS/2 using the Microsoft SQL Bridge.  Native TCP/IP connectivity will
  56. be accomplished with the release of the MDI Database Gateway for the
  57. UNIX platform.

  59. Agreement Strengthens MDI's Commitment to Open Architectures This
  60. agreement reaffirms MDI's support of open enterprise connectivity
  61. solutions by integrating robust workstation applications with
  62. mainframe data.  The MDI Database Gateway family of products allows
  63. front-end applications transparent access to both relational and
  64. non-relational mainframe data.  MDI Database Gateways incorporate
  65. unique functionality by permitting bi-directional transfer of data
  66. between mainframe data sources and LAN-based data sources.  In
  67. addition, the Database Gateway provides Data Compression; Connection
  68. Manager, which provides load balancing between multiple gateways; and
  69. Client Services Applications, which allow mainframe programs to
  70. initiate actions with the Database Gateway or Microsoft SQL Server.

  73. NeXT partnership is part of MDI's ISV (Independent Software Vendor)
  74. front-end tool certification program.  MDI established this program to
  75. ensure complete and transparent access to data sources from a variety

  77. built close relationships with the industry-leading suppliers of data
  78. access solutions to provide functionality with the Database Gateway
