- BETA TESTERS FOR NEW (FREE) FILE DISTRIBUTION APP WANTED
-
- R&A Software is planning to release (under the GNU license) a
- driver (and for NeXTSTEP also a GUI) that makes it easy to send
- files/directories over the net where people have limited links, like
- in the case of UUCP links. The package is called "Zend". The software
- is in two parts:
-
- 1. A driver that will run on any UNIX system.
- (It has been tested on SunOS, Ultrix, NeXTOS and (an old
- version of) AIX)
- 2. A set of GUI's (currently only NeXTSTEP is supported)
-
- The program will provide easy transferring of files/directories
- through e-mail. It is completely automated, but in order to work it
- has to be installed on both sides. One needs to be root to install
- (since the driver/app is setuid root).
-
- Security has been taking into account. For instance, normally the
- received files are delivered in a subdirectory of the home directory
- of the receiver, but it can be configured to receive on the spool disk
- (to prevent flooding the user disk). One can set limits on the size of
- transfers in all directions and in both compressed size (mail size)
- and real size. One can explicitely exclude or include users and
- systems that are allowed to send and receive. Data is only transferred
- after a check that the receiver has the program installed and will
- accept the result. Etc.
-
- Since the program is setuid root, more people should have a look at it
- before it goes out, since I don't want any security leak the moment
- the app is distributed officially.
-
- The app/driver is software under the GNU license and comes of course
- with the sources. The NeXTSTEP GUI plus a NeXT specific installation
- ((using netinfo) will be available as a separate package.
-
- Beta testers are needed. Preferred beta sites will include
- - Other OS's (like SysV, Ultrix, SunOS etc).
- - A UUCP mail link to the internet.
-
- Beta testers will receive the package through e-mail in
- compressed/tar/uuencoded/split form.
