- Summary: Quirky hard drive problem
-
-
- Hi, if you have any suggestions for the following problem, PLEASE REPLY!!
-
- I have had an internal APS Quantum ProDrive 105 in my Mac IIcx for
- about 2.5 years. It developed the following problem over the past few
- months:
-
- BASIC PROBLEM:
- When I boot up the Mac after several hours of inactivity,
- the Mac refuses to boot up from the hard drive and simply displays the
- 'happy mac' and stops. Hitting the reset button to reboot doesn't
- solve the problem, I must physically turn the Mac off and on.
-
- OBSERVATIONS:
- 1) THis problem ONLY occurs after the Mac has been off for a few hours.
- 2) When I turn it on after it's been off for a while, nothing happens,
- then there is an obvious 'click' sound and the hard drive starts
- spinning. If the Mac was recently used, the hard drive has a smooth
- spin-up sound.
-
- SUGGESTIONS BY APS WHICH HAVE BEEN TRIED ALREADY:
- 1) Install their latest device driver.
- 2) Run their program "BootTime" which sets a delay before the Mac
- supposedly searches for the drive.
- 3) Reseat all connector cables, etc.
- 4) Zap the paramter RAM.
-
- I noticed that the Boottime program had no effect on how long it
- took for the drive to boot up. APS tech couldn't explain it. I'm running
- System 7.0.1.
- Even though the ability of the drive to spin up quickly seemed to depend
- on how long ago the Mac was last turned off, APS strongly doubts
- that it's a drive sticking problem because my serial number isn't
- among those that Quantum reported problems with.
-
-
- My warranty has run out so I don't really want to send it to APS.
- If you have any suggestions or can explain any of the anomalies,
- please help!!
-
-
- THanks,
- Chester Liu
