- I've seen claims that the per unit cost of a PowerPC chip will be around $50
- once in full production. Considering that Motorola knows it has the two
- biggest makers of personal computers already behind that chip 100%, they can
- go to full production as quickly as possible, without worrying about starting
- slowly and later expanding as required by need. The Alpha currently costs
- $3500 each in sample quantities, and I seriously doubt they will get within
- an order of magnitude of the PowerPC's price -- maybe they could have come
- closer if they know they had the market the PowerPC chip does, but the Alpha
- is fabricated with a process much more complex and on the technological
- cutting edge than the PowerPC is, so its bound to be more expensive no matter
- what.
-
- IBM originally picked the 8088, and Apple the 68000, for their machines.
- Neither was the best/fastest CPU available at the time, why is everyone so
- concerned about getting the fastest possible CPU now? I'd rather see a machine
- cost $500 - $1000 less and give up some speed (though the 64 bits of the Alpha
- chip would be a useful advantage for the future) If you need something faster
- stick four CPUs in the same box -- I'm assuming that IBM and Apple will use
- some modern techniques in the development of PowerOpen and Pink, and they
- will be able to handle multiple CPUs easily ;-)
