- Several machines were not 32bit clean. The II, IIx, IIcx stand out in my
- mind.

- Apple advertised the machines as being able to handle the larger RAM
- capacities when the 4Meg RAM chips densities were finally shipping. This is
- when we only dreamed about Macs with more than 8 Meg RAM. (We lusted after
- 8M and dreamed of more).
-
- The ROMs didn't handle 32bit addressing correctly, so even if the RAM was
- available, it couldn't be accessed so it would be a waste to install it.
-
- Connectrix(?) wrote a program that patched the dirty parts of the ROM
- called Mode 32. Apple hemmed and hawed and twiddled their thumbs while the
- user's got pissed and magazines threatened class action suits against Apple
- for false advertising. Eventually, Apple bought the rights to distribute
- Mode32 for free. Their alternative was to ship 32bit clean ROMs to the
- people who bought the 32bit dirty machines.
-
- You can get Mode32 from FTP.APPLE.COM or SUMEX-AIM.STANFORD.EDU.

-
- You can compile 32bit clean code on a IIcx, however, you won't be able to
- test it without Mode32.
