- Parallel ports are usually used for printers. Serial for
- communications (modems). Parallel ports are used for much more
- nowadays though: network connections, tape drives, DAT drives,
- and even sound. Most of these devices were made because of laptop and
- notebook computers. These computers don't have much in the way of
- expansion slots. Most of them have parallel ports, so they made them
- do something more than talk one way to a printer.
