- KJ> I need information on to Apple video boards I have. The first board
- KJ> came with my IIfx and appears to be the standard 8bit color board.
- KJ> What has me puzzled though is that it has what appear to be to Simm
- KJ> memory holders on it. What I need to know is if this is a memory
- KJ> holder what goes in it and why?(additional colors or more speed,
- KJ> etc.?) The pictures that I have seen of other apple display cards do
- KJ> not include these holders. The second board was purchased new if a
- KJ> 8.24 standard board. My question regarding it is if the first board
- KJ> is really expandable with additional memory is there a need to have
- KJ> the 8.24 board. One last fly in the ointment is that a wholesalers
- KJ> catalog shows that Apple list a 2meg upgrade for the 8.24 GC for about
- KJ> $300. Is it possible that the 1st card is a 8.24 gc card with the
- KJ> 2megs of memory removed which is making it display in 8bit mode. I
- KJ> apologize for my lenght but I am new to the Apple computer and I have
- KJ> no local source of Apple wisdom. Please either reply here or via
- KJ> E-mail. Thanks, Kirk Jackson.

- 1. Think twice before upgrading to a 8.24 GC. A lot of reports regarding
- incompatibility with System 7. Apple upgraded the INIT, but I still heard the
- card became a 24-bit card without the acceleration part. I only own a 8.24
- card and can't tell you more.
-
- 2. Buy "Macintosh II: Repair and Upgrade Secrets" by Larry Pina, Brady
- Publishing, $39.95. One section is on VRAM (video RAM) upgrade for various
- Apple video cards, and which is or is not upgradable. Here is a list you can
- check:
- Model Number & Description
- MO211 Mac II (4-bit) video card
- M5640 Mac II Extended (8-bit) video card
- MO322 Mac II (4-bit) High-Res. video card
- MO324 Mac II Extended (8-bit) High-Res. video card
- MO504 Mac II 1-bit mono video card
- MO119 Mac II Portrait Display video card
- MO260 Mac II 2-page mono video card
- MO121PA/A Mac (8-bit) display card 4.8
- MO507PA/A Mac (24-bit) display card 8.24
- MO122 Mac (24-bit) display card 8.24GC
-
- 3. Upgrade your RAM soon. FX is a discontinued model and ou never know how
- long dealers will stock SIMMs for it.
