- Matt,
-
- In a word; Yes, but the problem is not unsolvable in some cases. If you
- buy a Supra and a Hardware Handshake cable, and if your terminal
- emulator software supports Hardware Handshake, and if you
- *Are*Not*Running*AppleTalk*, then you should do fine. You may find the
- CPU speed trottles you to some degree, and not much can be done with
- that. Some INITs interact with System 7 and above, and cause problems
- with high speed modems, or so I am told, but I experienced none of
- this while I was still using my Mac Plus. The trottling got better when
- I added a Brainstorm accelerator, and thereby doubled the CPU speed.
-
- The one thing that you WILL NOT be able to make work is running any BBS
- other than Second Sight, as they all require carrier detect from the modem
- to supervise connections. Since to use a high speed modem, you require
- hardware handshake, and the method of getting the CD signal used by BBS
- s/w on a Plus excludes HWHS, you are stuck. Software handshaking WILL
- NOT WORK in most cases. Seems to go OK with most ZMODEM transfers of
- text files, but not at all with XMODEM or YMODEM. Best not to try. If
- you need to run a BBS, get a machine with both the RTS/CTS pins and the
- GPi pin (used for CD) on it's serial ports. ALL Mac IIs, have it. The
- LCs do not. The Classics do not. The Plus doesn't. I'm not sure
- about the SE's or the Performa 600s...
-
- Good Luck! I like my Supra, it's one real problem is that the speakers
- seem to die an early death.
