- # This is not a test of a '040 versus a 486. This is a test of MacOS
- # vs. Windows.
-
- It is a test of the two most common GUI platforms (platform = hardware +
- software).
-
- # Windows *is* *a* *dog*.
-
- Right.
-
- # You can't say that the pc
- # hardware sucks because when you run windows on it and then run MacOS
- # on a comperable Mac, the mac is much faster, because MacOS is much
- # more efficient on the same hardware.
-
- Granted that Intel hardware is fast and cheap. I often buy Intel hardware for
- dedicated applications myself, where general usability issues are not
- important.
-
- The problem is that what people run on it for software.
-
- Unfortunately one cannot separate the value of a computer from the quality of
- it's software. You don't just run hardware, you run both.
-
- While OS/2 is a nice operating system, it's market penetration is zilch.
- Windows NT is probably nice, too, but it is vaporware, not available for real-
- world applicatibility testing (how stable is it? how fast will it be? how much
- hardware does it need in real-world use? how compatable is it REALLY?).
-
- People running a GUI on a PC run Windows 3.1, which makes the comparisons
- performed by Ingram quite appropriate.
-
- # If you want a medium performance computer that will run everything
- # from a 13 year old 8 bit character mode os to an extremely modern 32
- # bit graphical, protected mode, multithreaded, multitasking, virtual
- # memory, microkernel based multiuser operating system (and no, i don't
- # mean NT, though that might be able to fit that description above if
- # you stretched it with Microsoft Marketting Toolkit :-) ) that is
- # likely to be around into the next century, then a PC might not be a
- # bad idea.
-
- Funny, a Mac will run a 13 year old 8 bit character mode os to an extremely
- modern <etc.> os...
-
- I sure hope that by the year 2001 I have upgraded to much nicer hardware and
- software. The only thing that is important long-term is that you can move your
- data to the new box.
-
- The problem is that I need to buy computers for use today, not some indefinite
- time in the future (next century?) when MAYBE the OS's and application
- software available will have the same functionality as what is available on
- the Macintosh, now.
