- I think you're getting some of the services of the NeXT confused with their
- Mail front-end.
-
- NeXTMail is basically RTF format text with uuencoded attachments. The
- "non-NeXTMail" format is mostly ASCII with some codes thrown in to help
- NeXTMail locate the linebreaks to preserve the paragraph flow when another
- NeXT receives the message.
-
- It sounds like you want something that'll allow you to translate the
- NeXTMail message with sounds attached, to a Mac email message with the
- sounds attached and playable on the Mac.
-
- The NeXT sound format is not the same as the Mac format. It is much more
- complicated (and capable as it is CD Stereo quality). Tools exist to
- convert to/from Mac and other sound formats. If I remember right, a NeXT
- sound file is very close to Sun .au format.
-
- I know of nothing that will do all the conversions on the fly for you.
- *You* can manually do them though. Tools exist to allow you to uudecode a
- file (Tickle at SUMEX-AIM is very good).
-
- Current Mac email programs are not good candidates for this. Also, NeXTMail
- is their own proprietary method of sending mail. The two probably won't
- meet. What you can look for would be a MIME mail client for both systems.
- MIME will support the text formatting and is supposed to be better at
- handling attachments. However, I've not heard of a Mac MIME client and only
- a few Unix ones.
-
- Possibly Steve Dorner (Eudora's daddy) or Jim Matthews (Fetch's daddy and
- one of Blitzmail's creators) will chip in and blow my thoughts out of the
- water... they've got a hell of a lot more experience than me with this
- stuff. :-)
