You're welcome.

Yes. Smartcom II has support ZMODEM since version 3.2. 3.2 shipped in 1990
in the late summer.

"Happier?" Well, it is easier to work with Hayes and some Hayes-like products.
The secret is this. Smartcom II sends a special command to the modem, which
causes the modem to spew out exactly what type of modem it is, and the features
it supports. (This command, BTW, is documented : ATII4)
With Hayes modems, this reply contains the correct information for performing
all kinds of operations, such as the "Maximum" feature, where Smartcom II
places a call using the maximum speed the modems connecting are capable of
performing.
With other modems, this information may or may not be correct. Further, the
commands to access special features of the modem (like error correction,
compression and whatnot) are different from modem to modem (as are the
responses).
The fortunate thing is -- most modems work fine with the default behavior.
There are setup strings to access special features Smartcom II doesn't
know about.
If your modem doesn't work fine, there's a feature for disabling all of
this special behavior. It is checkbox called "Use reduced command set."
When this box is checked, the program only uses the most basic "AT" commands,
and a number of special features are disabled (eg "Maximum").
Bottom line: Smartcom II should work with just about any modem.
