- Adobe Photoshop is designed to manipulate pixel-based
- (resolution-dependent) images, as opposed to "vector"-based
- (resolution-independent) artwork. Version 2.0 added the ability to
- rasterize Adobe Illustrator artwork upon import. This means that it
- converts the artwork described in an Adobe Illustrator file to pixels that
- Adobe Photoshop can use. It is not designed to rasterize Aldus Freehand EPS
- (vector-based) artwork.
-
- Freehand EPS files use some commands that are different than those in an
- Illustrator file; these are not supported by Adobe Photoshop. Some text
- from Freehand, for example, will disappear because text is implemented
- differently from Adobe Illustrator. Files from newer versions of Freehand
- cause more problems because they contain more commands that are specific to
- Freehand and not Adobe Illustrator.
-
- Adobe Photoshop probably should display an error message when attempting to
- open a non-pixel-based, non-Illustrator EPS file. You've found a loophole
- that will not be reliable and that you should use only at your own risk.
-
- For better results, you can use a file format converter such as Altsys EPS
- Exchange to convert Freehand files to Adobe Illustrator format before
- opening with Adobe Photoshop.
