  13. Hi, I hope this is an appropriate group for this post.  Please help if you can.

  15. My LOGI 88-XT has lost its floppy disk drives:

  17. On bootup, I simply get the cryptic message "601" after the POST memory test.
  18. The machine then politely requests "Press F1 to continue".  When you press F1
  19. it continues to boot from drive C:, but there is no sign of "testing" the
  20. floppy drives as part of the boot process.  The drives remain dead.  If you
  21. try to read a directory or otherwise use one of them, you get the message
  22. "Drive not ready...".  There is no indication that the machine attempted to
  23. access the drive in question - i.e. no noise and no drive light on.

  25. Does anyone know what the error "601" indicates?  I assume it is a BIOS
  26. error message of some sort, relating to the failed FDDs.  Is it telling me
  27. anything useful, or is it just some sort of general statement of failure?

  29. The system is an XT using the NEC V20 chip.
  30. BIOS is Award ("Licensed")  [What other sort do they sell? :)]
  31. 640k memory
  32. Multi-I/O Card for FDDs, clock, parallel printer port, etc.
  33. HDD    Miniscribe Model 8425 with RLL controller to give 30 meg drive
  34. FDDs    A: is 5 1/4" 360k
  35.     D: is 3 1/2" 720k (configured as an external drive to get 720k)
  36.        [B: is physically the 3 1/2" drive, but machine thinks it is 360k].
  37. EGA Monitor
  38. XT/AT Keyboard [which occasionally gives problems too - error "301"]
