- Packard Bell (affectionally dubbed 'Packard Bomb') has two things going for it:
- 1. It is dirt cheap.
- 2. It is one of the few computers that you can just walk into a Wal-Mart or a
- Best Buy and purchase.
-
- This means that it is a computer that is more likely to be purchased by
- somone without a lot of knowledge about computers. (I am not saying you are
- not knowledgable, just that this factor could explain why Packard Bell
- computers are as frequent as they are.)
-
- No matter what computer system there is, someone will have something negative
- to say about it. But, from people I have known who have worked with Packard
- Bells, the negative seems to stand out. The one complaint I've heard over and
- over again is that if you go to upgrade your computer with extra memory or
- anything else, you will find the inside of the machine laid out in a weird way
- quite different from a typical clone. Weird meaning that it's difficult to
- work with its insides.
- I've heard rumors of a high failure rate, but you will have to check with
- others to see if this is so.
- Power supply failure is what I've unofficially heard as a common form
- failure. I've looked at stats in Computer Shopper and noticed that any given
- class of Packard Bell tends to run at a much lower wattage than other machines
- in the same class. If one is not going to do much expansion, that may be fine.
- But if you're thinking of lots of add-ons, it might have more proneness to
- overheating.
- I know a repairperson who groans when he hears the words Packard Bell... that
- may not mean much, but it seems representative of what I have heard about them.
-
- And though I don't know how Packard Bell carries out its warranties, I felt
- a bit leery when I read the specs of their warranty. It seems that the
- warranty does not like you putting any non-Packard Bell-installed components
- into your computer. Given that you may want to pick up components from a
- variety of third party manufacturers, this is something to consider.
