  23. And the alternative is to use the soft approach, set an MMU
  24. mapping to where you want, if you have the MMU, or beat it
  25. into the kernel. The latter is quite simple -- pirates could
  26. distribute the setpatch utility for the cracked game.

  28. It is impossible to provide hardware copy protection without
  29. strangling the architecture to a point where it cannot be 
  30. developed any further.

  32. It's ignorant and insulting to presume that somebody will
  33. not crack a piece of software under any circumstances. What
  34. you need to do is to make illegal use extremely embarrassing
  35. and individual cracking impractical (why spend $6000 to hire
  36. a cracker, when the licence costs $2000?). With more
  37. expensive products, that's easy to support - simply compile
  38. and link the code with *hard* definitions of the legal
  39. owner, etc encoded in the binary. Upsetting the bytes would
  40. cause severe dysfunction.
