- Some years ago Steve Jobs tried to market the Next computer system
- to those of in academia as "The Scholar's Workstation." He failed.
- Why? Well, in large part because the cost per seat for his system
- was far too high to be effectively absorbed by either our central
- campus, departmental, grant, or personal budgets.

- One way for IBM to get into the academic marketplace -- and thereby
- bootstrap followon sales by graduating students familiar with OS/2
- -- would be to create an attractively priced integrated platform to
- include OS/2 2.1, TCP/IP, PMX (X Windows Server), sendmail compliant
- email and maybe a few small applets including professor's gradebooks.
- Then IBM could sell these packages to campuses as a very inexpensive
- Scholar's Workstation upgrade to what are for most of our professors
- 386SX (or better) workstations.
