- Sorry I didn't post this earlier, but I misplaced the magazine :-)
-
- The November 92 issue of _Home Office Computing_ (Building Better
- Businesses with Technology) has an article titled 'Do Integrated
- Packages Really Give You The "Works"?' After a page or so of
- background info they give thumbnail reviews of 9 DOS, 3 Windoze, and 5
- Mac integrated packages.
-
- Since this is the GeoWorks newsgroup (I didn't cross-post) I won't
- bother to list all the ratings. Alas, while LotusWorks v3.0 was the
- only DOS package to get 4 stars, GeoWorks Pro v1.2 was rated 2 stars.
- (It could have been worse, DeskMate v3.05 (blech) was on the bottom
- with 1.5 and the closing line "If you need to begin being productive
- immediately, look elsewhere.")
-
- I won't repeat the entire GW blurb since we're all familar with the
- package. The mag says "... GeoWorks Pro runs under DOS but offers a
- graphic interface similar to that of the Macintosh. And while PC/GEOS
- doesn't offer the same extensive third-party support as Windows does,
- it offers many of the same user benefits as the Microsoft product."
-
- After talking about the different levels (beginner, etc) it ends with
- "... unfortunately, the supplied GeoWorks modules (except for Quattro
- Pro) might prove too elementary for many small-business owners.
- However, though they offer few features, the modules are simple and
- easy to use. If your computer needs are basic and your computer isn't
- powerful enough to run Windows, GeoWorks Pro can be a bright software
- solution."
-
- In the closing remarks, the authors say "At the low end in the
- IBM-compatible market, it's hard to beat Microsoft Works. ... The
- LotusWorks interface emulates the look and feel of a graphical
- environment like Windows well, but without that popular GUI's high
- hardware demands. In fact, LotusWorks' performance on a
- first-generation PC/XT, although it won't set any speed records, is
- quite acceptable." I should point out that a 286 or better is
- recommended by Lotus.
-
- To be fair, I'm surprised _Home Office_ even knew about GW. If it had
- some third-party business packages that fit the home office niche I'm
- sure it would have been rated higher. The newest issue of _HO_ has an
- article about 486 machines, so perhaps the editors feel if you are
- starting a business you're going to buy a 386 or 486 with Windoze
- bundled in and then buy MicroSloth Office or (their preferred package
- in this article) Enable 4.5.
-
- Heck, they didn't even mention the games that come with GW :-)
