  23. Steve, just why in the hell are you getting so worked up over this?
  24. I've been on The WELL for 3 years (come March), and I can safely say
  25. that this is not a problem.  I have never seen a serious controversial
  26. discussion about this issue on The WELL; and, believe me, the (over
  27. 6,000, now) members do indeed argue and make controversies over just
  28. about anything you can imagine.

  30. So, what would you *like* the WELL management to do?  If Jerry Garcia
  31. wants to troll around on The WELL and discuss guitars or family or
  32. cooking in (as jfw@neuro.duke.edu so articulately put it) the rare kind
  33. of quietude that just about only this medium can allow, and if he's not
  34. yanking people's chains online while doing this, what's the problem?
  35. WELL staff don't keep a secret of the fact that some -- what, handful?
  36. Handful-and-a-half? -- of these otherwise-very-recognizable names are
  37. around.

  39. I don't get what you want to have happen.  Suppose this hypothetical
  40. Jerry Garcia called up the WELL office and said he wanted an account,
  41. but really didn't want to be hounded by virtually-panting fans every
  42. time he'd try to post to a conference.  Suppose he asked for a
  43. "celebrity" account, as we might as well call them.  Do you want
  44. management to say, "No, sorry, Jer, ol' buddy, no-can-do -- you'll just
  45. have to go over to Compu$erve, or AmeriKa-Online, or (God forbid)
  46. Plodigy.  Can't have you rubbing virtual elbows with the plebes, after
  47. all."  Wouldn't the WELL community be the loser in that scenario?  Part
  48. of what makes The WELL a different (better) place than USENET or CI$ is
  49. that it does draw an extraordinarily high number of proven-creative
  50. people.  The signal-to-noise ration is high.

  52. Anyway, I can name 20-or-so honest-to-God celebs who are online there in
  53. the emporer's new clothes, as it were; i.e., fully revealed.
