- I am actually following up Don Gilbert's post, but don't have the original.

- I am wondering whether there's a bit of reinventing the wheel going on with
- what Don is suggesting. Doesn't the z39.50 protocol allow for these types of
- queries? I am not completely up on the details of either the gopher or z39.50
- or WAIS protocols, so perhaps I am suggesting something silly. But, couldn't
- we somehow take advantage of z39.50 directly?

- What I am seeing coming out of Don's suggestion is:

- Gopher boolean searching based on WAIS
- WAIS searching based on z39.50

- So, now we have 3 protocols for searching: z39.50, WAIS, and Gopher. Unless we
- are very careful, I fear small variations in each will cause incompatibilities.
