  12. A recent mailing from our National Geophysical Data Center indicates
  13. the availability of a CD-ROM containing global ecosystems data. To
  14. quote:

  16.      The CD-ROM includes selected data on the global environment,
  17.      such as ecosystems, land use, wetlands, vegetation (including
  18.      satellite-derived vegation index), climate, topography, and
  19.      soils. These data are on a range of compatibile grids, from
  20.      2 degrees to 2 minutes. Vector data for coastlines and other
  21.      features are also provided. ... We plan to provide periodic
  22.      updates and enhancements to the disk. ... The CD-ROM format
  23.      ... is readable on IBM-DOS compaatible machines, Apple
  24.      Macintoshes, UNIX workstations, and other computers that
  25.      support the ISO 9660 standard. ... The data are completely
  26.      within the public domain... We provide software to browse,
  27.      visualize, and select appropriate portions of the database
  28.      for your work. Primarily, however, the database is designed
  29.      to interface with many statistical, image analysis, and
  30.      geographic information systems. Data and sample setups are
  31.      provided in two highly accessible geographic information
  32.      systems, GRASS and IDRISI, to show how they can be used in
  33.      other GISs. The structure of the database has demonstrated
  34.      its adaptability by passing several tests by software
  35.      vendors for quick and easy importation into their system.

  37. The price for the CD-ROM incuding 300+ pages of documentation is
  38. $100 (product number 1016-A27-001). Orders MUST be prepaid and
  39. those from outside the U.S. must include an additional $10 handling
  40. fee. They will take Amex, Visa, and MasterCard in a faxed order
  41. showing expiration date, card number, telephone number, and your
  42. signature.
