- Below is the response I got from SCO support. It fixed my problem.
-
- File /etc/auth/system/ttys keeps growing with duplicate tty entries.
-
- KEYWORDS: file /etc/auth/system/ttys c2 grows growing duplicate tty entries security relax root login tty1a 1a user modem system performance update
-
- RELEASE: SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 2.0
- SCO Open Desktop Release 1.1.0
-
- PROBLEM: A duplicate tty entry is continuously being appended to the end
- of the file /etc/auth/system/ttys with every login from a specific
- tty. This causes the file to grow indefinitely and system
- performance degrades since, with every login, the ttys file is
- updated and all duplicate entries get updated with the current
- date.
-
- CAUSE: This problem will be fixed in a future release of SCO UNIX System
- V/386. Reported cases involve logging in via modem on tty1A. If
- an entry for tty1A does not exist in the ttys file, a duplicate
- entry for tty1a gets appended to the end of the file. Then, with
- every login, another tty1a is appended and all entries for tty1a
- have to be updated with the current date which causes performance
- problems.
-
- SOLUTION: Make sure /etc/auth/system/devassign has the correct entries.
- For example:
-
- tty1a:v_devs=/dev/tty1a,/dev/tty1A:v_type=terminal:chkent:
- tty2a:v_devs=/dev/tty2a,/dev/tty2A:v_type=terminal:chkent:
-
- Add the entry tty1A (or necessary tty) to /etc/auth/system/ttys
- manually:
-
- tty1A:t_devname=tty1A:chkent:
-
- or using Sysadmsh->Accounts->Terminal->Create.
- Delete all the duplicate entries except the original one.
