- Greetings,
-
- About a month ago I posted a request for data entry information and I
- promised a summary of the responses so here goes:
-
- I received six responses. 3 of the respondents are using PC data entry
- software called KeyEntry III which is sold by Southern Computer Systems.
- The software apparently runs on both MS-DOS and PS/2 systems. All three
- of the respondents are happy with KeyEntry III and said it is easy to
- build and maintain formats. Other comments offered were "very flexible"
- and "company personnel very supportive".
-
- One respondent recently switched from Pertec to GEMIDEX, PC data
- entry software from Specialized Data Systems. GEMIDEX costs only about
- $400 which is a big savings from the $900/month Pertec maintenance fee.
- They are very happy with their new data entry environment.
-
- Another respondent uses PC data entry software called RODE/PC which is a
- product of DFX. The software was described as "a very capable,
- professional product suitable for experienced heads down data entry staff
- to use".
-
- One respondent said they have moved away from doing any data entry at the
- computer center. Data is entered at the point it arrives. Admissions
- applications are entered as part of the reception process and grades are
- entered in the Registrar's Office via a Rally application. This approach
- has been successful for them. One of the other respondents said they are
- still doing data entry at the computer center but they hope to be out of
- the data entry business in another year.
-
- My original posting also asked some questions about scanning. Only a
- couple of the respondents commented on scanning and they seem to be using
- it for the same types of things we are using it for at Marquette; test
- scoring and some surveys.
-
- After reviewing the responses, we have decided to take a closer look at
- KeyEntry III and GEMIDEX. I called the vendors of both companies and
- they are sending me more information.
-
- All of the responses contained helpful information and I thank
- all those that took the time to respond:
-
- Dave Allgier - Eastern Kentucky University
- Lou Browdy - Cornell
- Trevor Garland - McGill University
- Dana Nielsen - Northwestern University
- R.B. Eaton - University of Saskatchewan
- Les Pennington - Washington
-
- I don't think I missed anybody but I apologize if I did.
-
- Thanks and happy holidays!
