- I, for one, was quite disappointed with this film. I quite agree that Martin
- was at his best during the film's quieter, more thoughtful moments, and I do
- appreciate the strength his acting showed in this respect (Winger and Neeson are
- both wonderful, consistently strong actors, as they were here, but I frankly
- thought that these fine actors were wasted in roles that were superficial and
- underwritten).
-
- I was just never able to accept Martin as an evangelist, even as a glitzy,
- hucksterish one. In particular, I cringed at the kinetics of his stage act.
- As he pranced, leapt, and generally cavorted about the stage, all I could
- think of was the Wild and Crazy Guy. I wish someone had told him that the
- film would have been popular without his antics, which I found unbelievable
- and *unappealing*.
-
- The ending is simply appalling, so much so that I really don't even want to
- discuss it.
-
- I'm generally a Martin fan, and so went to the movie with great good will,
- but left feeling melancholy at the thought of yet another spectacle without
- substance. Oh well.
