- It's been a rough week. My E-Mail address has changed from Massachusetts
- twice, then to Ohio, and now it's North Carolina. The only bummer with
- this new system is that I can no longer remain the Chrome-Plated Megaphone
- of Destiny (sorry Frank). This mailer won't let me change my personal
- name! 8( Oh well... And don't let the address name fool ya, I still don't
- dance (unless I'm on the better half of a case). Anyways, here's my OMC:
-
- I've been packing up my stuff to get ready for the big move next week. I
- was boxing up my CDs and there was a little space left in the last box. I
- didn't want them rattling around cracking their jewel boxes, so I had to go
- out and buy some more to fill up the space. 8) Here's what I picked up:
-
- Spin Doctors: _Homebelly Groove Live_
- More of the same from the Spins. If you like any of their other
- stuff, than this won't hold many surprises for you. Don't get me wrong,
- they're good, but there's not as much variety in their style as the other
- HORDE bands like Phish or Blues Traveller. 7 of the songs were recorded
- back in 1990. Of these 7, 4 were previously released on the 1990 EP _Up
- For Grabs_. An additional 3 songs are from this past summer's tour.
-
- Steve Coleman: _Rhythm in Mind_
- Beer talked about this one a while back. Steve leaves Funk aside to
- do some more traditional jazz. The band includes Steve, Von Freeman, Kenny
- Wheeler, Kevin Eubanks, Tommy Flanagan, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, and
- Marvin Smith. Top notch performances all around.
-
- Tom Waits: _Frank's Wild Years_
- _Bone Machine_
- With all the recent discussion of Waits I decided to give some of
- his stuff a try. I picked up _Frank's Wild Years_ and put it in my car CD
- player as I went to do some other errands. I was digging it so much that
- when I went to Lechmere I noticed that they were having a 25% off CDs sale
- and picked up _Bone Machine_ too. He's definitely a very twisted
- individual, but I like it. 8) I was happy to see that Mark Ribot plays on
- a couple of the cuts on _Bone Machine_. I really liked his _Rootless
- Cosmopolitans_ album and have been looking for more of his work. Les
- Claypool of Primus also puts in an appearance, reciprocating for Tom's
- work on "Tommy the Cat".
-
- Steve Hackett: _Voyage of the Acolyte_
- This was a hesitant purchase. I loved his work with Genesis, but the
- only other solo album I've heard by him was _Cured_ which I truly despised.
- I figured I'd go for one of his early effort and I was rewarded. This was
- recorded in 1975 when he was still a member of Genesis and as such, is very
- close to the Genesis music of that time. Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins
- appear throughout. The first cut has bits that remind me of Rick Wakeman's
- _Six Wives of Henry VIII_.
