-
- what David was talking about, when Len was talking
- about, and what I was talking about may be a couple
- of different issues. Bloomdido did a good job of
- making a stew of them all. Let me try to clarify
- my own remarks.
-
- 1) censorship is when the govt. steps in and stops
- distribution.
- 2) a burr up your butt is when you get offended by
- someone's particular expression of free speech
-
- I think it is perfectly okay for Len to get a burr up
- his butt over people slamming his Main Man. I think it
- is perfectly okay for other people to get a burr up their
- own over, say, piss malcom.
-
- I understood Len's question to be why people get a burr
- up their butt over one but not the other, with the implication
- being that it is hypocritical. I think there is no hypocrisy,
- and no problem - if you are easily offended, go for it. Just
- don't expect us all to agree or even sympathize with you. I
- gave a rationale for the difference in concern over piss christ
- and piss malcom. Work yourself up over whichever you please.
-
- David (it was david, wasn't it?) seemed to confuse this with
- censorship. If I protest or picket or launch into a tirade
- over Danzig, that isn't censorship. If I gather up the LPs
- and burn them, that isn't censorship. If I ask the govt. to
- do that, it is.
-
- It is very important to distinguish between people who are
- protesting the message and people who are protesting the
- freedom to present the message.
-
- It may seem a subtle distinction, but it is an important
- one. Freedom of speech means freedom to oppose ideas, too.
-
- Okay?
