- According to Zerwick (the title of whose book escapes me) the
- article emphasises the definiteness of a thing, the lack of article
- the quality. Thus 'the law' refers to a particular law (e.g. the
- Torah), whereas 'law' refers to the principle of law (a useful
- distinction in Romans and Galatians). According to Zerwick, it is
- notable when a concrete noun has no article (e.g. law), or when an
- abstract noun has an article (e.g. 'the faith'). Not that any such
- rules are absolutes, of course.
-
- An example (of my own invention) is Romans 5:3-4, which has articles
- as follows (from memory):
-
- "the suffering produces perseverance, the perseverance character,
- the character hope"
-
- It may be Paul is saying, "the suffering which belongs to you produces
- the quality of perseverance, the specific perseverance which as a
- result belongs to you produces the quality of character, and the
- particular character you have developed produces the quality of
- hope". Or there may be other and better explanations! I've done
- 2 years of Greek at a theological college, so 'scholar' is a fair
- exagerration!
-
- At any rate, Zerwick's thesis is consistent with the theory about
- 'the Holy Spirit' vs 'Holy Spirit'.
