To "Terri in Cleveland",
I've lived in the Twin Cities all my life, and while I'm not an expert on the
subject, I'll try and give you my best recollections.
Here it goes...
Back in the 70s, Channel 11 (WTCN) was an independent station which carried
Casey and Roundhouse (of course, you knew that) which I remember watching myself as
a kid. Later, two other stations, channel 5 (KSTP-NBC) and channel 9 (KMSP-ABC) along
with WTCN decided to shuffle their networks. What happened was WTCN became an NBC
affiliate, KSTP got ABC, and channel 9 went independant. During the mid 80s, WTCN
aquired the call letters WUSA. A couple of months later, the call letters were
purchased by a Washington D.C. station (I think) and channel 11 became KARE. Channels
2 and 17 (PBS) and channel 4 (WCCO-CBS) remained the same throughout this time.
Enough about the VHF channels. During the 80s, three new UHF channels were added;
in channel 41 (KLXX, St. Cloud), channel 29 (KITN-FOX), and channel 23 (KTMA). KTMA was the station that started it all! I remember watching the original MST episodes with my brother on Saturdays and I've been a fan ever since! Channels 41 and 23 have since changed ownership and call letters a number of times.
