- Negative.
-
- Channel 11, former WTCN has changed it's name a couple of times. First
- to WUSA (Ugh) then to KARE (Ugh again).
-
- Channel 23 came into existance a couple of years before a cable franchise
- was awarded. The station was a "broadcast cable" concept. Scrambled
- programming was beamed over the airwaves and you rented a descrambler from
- them.
-
- Soon, home made receiving antennas and descramblers started showing up
- everywhere. When the cable franchise was awarded, the station went pretty
- much down the tubes.
-
- It was revived as an independent regular broadcast station. It started
- showing really old basically unwanted sitcoms and such from the 50's and
- 60's. When those came back into vogue, the station started improving.
- A couple of other stations followed which always seemed to manage better
- and have better backing.
-
- Channel 23, however, did succeed in one area, and that's with the MST3K
- idea. Their total low-budget non-sequiter way of existance (Forced on
- them because they couldn't afford anything else) made it a perfect home
- for MST3K. No other station would ever even take such a concept
- seriously. They probably saw MST3K as a way to fill two hours with no
- real budget.
-
- Fortunately for 23, MST3K became an instant cult classic. Unfortunately
- for 23, as Trace (I think) said, "We found Comedy Central and Channel 23
- found God." 23 has gone through a number of ownership/format changes and
- is now sort-of a local "Family Channel" with lots of Brady Bunch,
- relgious-approved-happy-family-values (no Murphy Brown :-) programming.
-
- What seems strange, though, is that they also show some good war films...
- Hmmm...
